The narrative unfolds around Savitri, whose unwavering devotion and intelligence compelled Yama, the god of death, to restore her husband Satyavan’s life. Central to the composition is the sacred banyan tree, the 'vat vriksha,' its branches often providing shelter to the devotees, as depicted in traditional Madhubani fashion. The scene is rendered with the characteristic stylised almond eyes and a meticulous density that leaves no space empty, integrating elements like the sun and moon, symbolising eternal blessings, within the rich narrative.

Ajay Kumar Jha, an artist from Delhi, continues the vibrant legacy of Madhubani or Mithila painting, an art form traditionally practiced by women in the Mithila region of Bihar. Originating on the freshly plastered mud walls and floors of homes for weddings and festivals, this intricate style transitioned onto handmade paper from the 1960s, a medium embraced in this piece. The artwork showcases the hallmark features of the tradition: distinct double-line borders and an intense filling of space, possibly reflecting the bold colour application of the bharni style, or the fine linear details of kachni. Motifs of fish, peacocks, lotus blossoms, and serpents, deeply rooted in Mithila culture, are subtly woven into the composition, enriching its spiritual and aesthetic depth.

As a one-of-a-kind original, this Madhubani painting is a testament to individual artistry and cultural heritage, distinctly not a print. It arrives with a signed Certificate of Authenticity, ensuring its provenance and value. We are pleased to offer complimentary insured delivery for this unique acquisition across India, allowing collectors to enjoy this piece of living tradition without concern.
