Description

This striking Madhubani painting depicts Ardhnareshwar, the powerful composite form of Shiva and Parvati. Symbolising the inseparable union of masculine and feminine energies, purusha and prakriti, this deity represents the divine totality and harmony of creation. The revered figure is rendered here with the characteristic stylised almond eyes, framed by precise double-line borders, and enveloped in the dense, all-over filling that is a hallmark of the Madhubani tradition, imbuing the composition with auspicious symbolism.

This exquisite painting is by Ajay Kumar Jha, an artist working in Delhi, demonstrating the evolution of Madhubani, or Mithila art. Traditionally, this vibrant art form was created by women in the Mithila region of Bihar, adorning freshly plastered mud walls and floors for weddings and festivals. From the 1960s, Madhubani transitioned onto handmade paper, a medium that enabled its intricate patterns and rich storytelling to travel and gain wider recognition. Jha skillfully employs the art's defining characteristics, whether through the bold colour fills of the bharni style or the fine line work of kachni, always featuring the iconic double-line borders, stylised almond eyes, and a dense composition that fills every space with symbolic motifs.

This unique artwork is a one-of-a-kind original, not a mass-produced print. It ships with a signed Certificate of Authenticity, guaranteeing its provenance and authenticity. We are pleased to offer complimentary insured delivery across India for this special piece, ensuring it arrives safely to its new home.
