This compelling Madhubani painting presents Chaturbhujadhari Lord Hayagreeva, a revered avatar of Vishnu celebrated as the deity of knowledge and wisdom. Portrayed with a human body and a horse's head, Hayagreeva is historically significant for restoring the stolen Vedas, symbolising the triumph of divine intellect. In this work, the master artist renders the four-armed deity with the iconic stylised almond eyes of the Madhubani tradition, its divine form intricately detailed and enveloped by symbolic elements, all adhering to the characteristic dense compositions and double-line borders of Mithila art.
Crafted by Sanjib Kumar Jha, a master folk artist from a village in Bihar, this Madhubani piece is executed on handmade paper. The Madhubani, or Mithila, tradition originated in the Mithila region of Bihar, where women historically adorned freshly plastered mud walls and floors for significant occasions like weddings and festivals. From the 1960s, this vibrant folk art transitioned onto handmade paper, preserving its distinct hallmarks: double-line borders, dense filling that deliberately leaves no space empty, stylised almond eyes, and recurring motifs of fish, peacocks, lotuses, the sun, moon, and serpents. This particular work showcases the refined application of either the bharni style, known for its bold colour fills, or the kachni style, distinguished by fine line work and cross-hatching.
This unique artwork is a one-of-a-kind original, not a print, offering an authentic piece of India's living artistic heritage.
