Description

This vibrant Phad painting narrates the Hanuman Chalisa, a revered Hindu devotional hymn dedicated to Lord Hanuman. Hanuman, the embodiment of unwavering devotion, strength, and courage, is celebrated for his pivotal role in the Ramayana as Rama's loyal companion and aide. Here, the traditional Phad visual language brings his heroic exploits to life, depicting scenes from his legendary feats: his flight to Lanka, his encounter with Sita, and his monumental task of carrying the Sanjeevani mountain. Figures are rendered in characteristic profile with large, expressive eyes, densely packed across the cloth in a narrative style echoing the comprehensive spirit of the Chalisa itself.

Hand-painted by artist Shagun Sengar Shaha from Bangalore, this work employs natural dyes and stone colours on cloth, a hallmark of authentic Phad artistry. The Phad tradition originated with the Joshi painters of Shahpura and Bhilwara in Rajasthan, creating long, horizontal scroll narratives that historically chronicled the folk deities Pabuji and Devnarayan. These vibrant canvases, distinguished by their crowded compositions and bright vegetable colours, traditionally functioned as travelling temples, animated and explained by bhopa priest-singers during epic recitations. This painting carries forward that ancient legacy of storytelling through its meticulous craftsmanship and spirited palette.

As a one of a kind original, this Phad painting is not a print, representing a singular artistic creation. It ships accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity, guaranteeing its provenance and originality. We are pleased to offer complimentary insured delivery across India, ensuring this exceptional piece arrives safely to its new home.
