In this captivating Madhubani painting, Nishu Singh portrays the revered Lakshmi Narayana, an iconic representation of Vishnu, the preserver deity, in divine repose upon the cosmic serpent Sheshnag, accompanied by his consort, Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. This profound imagery symbolises the eternal cosmic order, divine sustenance, and the harmonious union of spiritual and material abundance. Here, the traditional Madhubani visual language imbues the scene with its signature stylisation, featuring characteristic almond eyes, intricately patterned forms for both deities and the coiled Sheshnag, and dense, evocative filling that is a hallmark of the Mithila tradition.
Created by artist Nishu Singh using acrylic colours on cold pressed paper, this artwork bridges ancient practices with modern mediums. Madhubani, also known as Mithila art, hails from the Mithila region of Bihar. Historically, it was a ritualistic art form painted by women on freshly plastered mud walls and floors of their homes during significant life events and festivals. The transition to paper began in the 1960s. Nishu Singh's work exemplifies the distinct hallmarks of Madhubani, including the characteristic double-line borders, stylised almond eyes, and the deliberate 'horror vacui' of dense decorative filling that leaves no space unadorned, often incorporating motifs like serpents and celestial bodies.
