This captivating Madhubani painting by Neelam Singh presents Mahadev, the revered Lord Shiva, a pivotal deity in the Hindu pantheon. Shiva embodies both the destructive and regenerative forces of the universe, often depicted as an ascetic yogi or the cosmic dancer Nataraja. In this work, the artist employs the distinctive Madhubani visual language to portray the deity, likely featuring his iconic attributes such as a third eye, the crescent moon, and perhaps the river Ganga flowing from his matted hair, rendered with stylised almond eyes and the characteristic double-line borders that frame the divine presence.
Hailing from Uttar Pradesh, artist Neelam Singh crafts this piece using acrylics on a handmade sheet, continuing a rich tradition that originated in the Mithila region of Bihar. Madhubani art, historically known as Mithila painting, was initially created by women on the freshly plastered mud walls and floors of their homes during auspicious occasions like weddings and festivals. From the 1960s, this intricate practice transitioned onto paper, adapting its dense compositions and bold colour filling, often referred to as the bharni style, where every inch of space is meticulously adorned with motifs like fish, peacocks, or lotus blossoms, reflecting a deep connection to nature and spirituality.
This artwork is presented as a truly one-of-a-kind original, ensuring its unique status within any collection. It is not a reproduction or a print, but an authentic creation by Neelam Singh, and will be accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity.
