Description

The majestic peacock, India's national bird, is a potent emblem of beauty, fertility, and auspiciousness. Revered in Hindu culture, it is often associated with the deity Kartikeya and seen as a harbinger of rain, embodying grace and immortality. In this Madhubani work, the peacock motif is rendered with the distinct stylisation of the Mithila tradition, its form densely filled with intricate patterns, characteristic almond eyes, and likely employing the bold colour fill of the bharni style.

Crafted by artist Rina Patwa from Jharkhand, this painting exemplifies the evolution of Madhubani art onto contemporary mediums. Originating from the Mithila region of Bihar, this vibrant folk tradition was historically practiced by women on freshly plastered mud walls and floors for ceremonies and festivals. Since the 1960s, its distinctive visual language, marked by double-line borders, dense compositional filling, and iconic motifs such as the lotus and sun, has gracefully transitioned to handmade paper and, as seen here, acrylic on MDF board.

This piece is presented as a singular, one-of-a-kind original, not a reproduction print. It is dispatched with a signed Certificate of Authenticity, underscoring its unique provenance, and includes complimentary insured delivery across India.
