Description

This exquisite Madhubani painting depicts a resplendent multicolored peacock, a creature deeply embedded in Indian cultural symbolism. The peacock, celebrated for its striking beauty and vibrant plumage, embodies grace, love, and immortality. In Hindu tradition, it serves as the vahana of Lord Kartikeya and is also associated with the goddess Saraswati, representing knowledge and arts. Here, the bird is rendered with the characteristic Madhubani stylization, its form intricately detailed with dense, bold colour fills typical of the bharni style, framed by the traditional double-line borders, all contributing to a captivating and auspicious visual narrative.

Created by artist Ajay Kumar Jha from Delhi, this original work is meticulously painted on handmade paper, a medium that gained prominence for Madhubani art from the 1960s. Rooted in the Mithila region of Bihar, Madhubani, or Mithila art, was traditionally created by women on freshly plastered mud walls and floors for significant life events such as weddings and festivals. The art form is distinguished by its hallmarks: continuous double-line borders, an aversion to empty space with subjects densely filled, and stylized elements such as almond eyes. While this piece showcases the bold colour fill of the bharni style, Madhubani also encompasses the fine line and cross-hatching of kachni.

This painting is a singular, one of a kind original, not a print, ensuring its unique place in any collection. It ships accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity, underscoring its provenance. We are pleased to offer complimentary insured delivery across India for this exceptional artwork.
