Description

This exquisite Pattachitra painting depicts the 'Samudra Manthan', or the Churning of the Ocean, a foundational myth in Hindu cosmology. This epic narrative, often recounted in texts like the Bhagavata Purana, illustrates the momentous collaboration between devas and asuras to extract Amrita, the elixir of immortality, from the cosmic ocean. Lord Vishnu's essential role, appearing as Kurma to support Mount Mandara and as Mohini to distribute the nectar, is central to the tale. In this work, the scene is rendered with the dynamic energy and meticulous detail characteristic of Pattachitra, showcasing the vibrant palette and strong, expressive outlines that bring this pivotal moment to life.

Masterfully crafted by Asish Kumar Das from Bhubneswar, this Pattachitra is painted with natural water colours on fine Tussar silk. The Pattachitra tradition, a revered cloth-based scroll painting art from Odisha, has its historical roots in Puri and the renowned artist village of Raghurajpur. Its distinctive technique involves preparing the 'patta' or cloth with a base of tamarind glue and chalk, followed by the application of mineral and vegetable dyes. This results in the bold lines and ornate floral borders that have long defined this ancient art form, traditionally narrating tales of Lord Jagannath, Krishna-lila, and the Dashavatara.

As a testament to its singular artistry, this painting is a one-of-a-kind original, not a mass-produced print. It ships complete with a signed Certificate of Authenticity, ensuring its provenance and value. We are pleased to offer free insured delivery across India for this unique work.
