Description

This magnificent Pattachitra by master artist Rabi Behera vividly portrays the Samudra Manthan, or the Churning of the Ocean. A foundational narrative in Hindu cosmology, this epic event describes the joint endeavour of gods and demons to churn the cosmic ocean for the nectar of immortality, Amrita. Lord Vishnu's crucial role as Kurma, the tortoise, supporting Mount Mandara, and Vasuki, the serpent king, used as the churning rope, are central to this dramatic tableau. In this exquisite work, the traditional Pattachitra idiom, characterised by its strong, deliberate outlines and vibrant, symbolic colour palette, brings this complex mythology to life with striking detail and narrative depth.

Crafted by the esteemed master folk artist Rabi Behera, this painting exemplifies the refined artistry of Odisha's Pattachitra tradition. The medium, watercolor on 'Patti' or specially prepared cloth, is fundamental to this ancient scroll painting art. Originating from Puri and the famed artist village of Raghurajpur, the cloth base undergoes a meticulous preparation with tamarind glue and chalk. Artists then apply natural mineral and vegetable colours, known for their luminosity and permanence, finishing with the tradition's characteristic strong outlines and elegant floral borders that elegantly frame the sacred narratives, often centred around Lord Jagannath, Krishna-lila, and the Dashavatara.

As a testament to individual artistic skill and cultural heritage, this is a unique, one of a kind original painting, not a print or reproduction. Each brushstroke carries the hand of Rabi Behera, making it a singular acquisition for any discerning collector. It will be dispatched with a signed Certificate of Authenticity, ensuring its provenance, and arrives with complimentary insured delivery across India.
