This striking Madhubani painting depicts Sankatmochan Hanuman, the revered deity embodying immense strength, unwavering devotion, and the power to overcome obstacles. Known as the 'remover of troubles,' Hanuman is a central figure in Hindu mythology, particularly in the epic Ramayana. In this rendition, Hanuman is rendered with the characteristic stylised almond eyes and bold contours typical of the Mithila tradition, his form often densely filled to convey his iconic presence. The composition adheres to the genre's principle of horror vacui, leaving no space empty, creating a vibrant, immersive visual narrative.
Created by Nishu Singh from Patna, this original work employs natural colours on a handmade base, echoing the art form's deep connection to its ecological roots. Originating from the Mithila region of Bihar, Madhubani art was traditionally painted by women on freshly plastered mud walls and floors for significant occasions like weddings and and festivals. From the 1960s, this tradition transitioned onto handmade paper, adapting its distinctive double-line borders and intricate motifs, often featuring a blend of bharni, with its bold colour fills, and kachni, known for its fine line work and cross-hatching.
This piece stands as a unique, one-of-a-kind original, a direct expression of the artist's hand rather than a print.
